Artist Statement Ekaterina Maltseva.


I search live in Life. For me art is a way of discovering and revealing what is hidden from the eye, what is prescribed by the Universe between the lines.

I am the author of "Watercolor Improvisation". What I feel is that watercolor painting can aim at creating an authentic image from emptiness, surging as a metaphor of the living process itself. The water element lives in watercolor, it has a natural plasticity, transparency, peacefulness and silence and at the same time carries strength and passion. Watercolor is a visual embodiment of all the qualities of the omnipresent water element. It is able to carry away into the farthest distances, to quench the most burning thirst. As an artist I strive to capture the mysteries of this profound energy, to connect with it, to express my discoveries and insights in a non-verbal form.

In my artistic practice I explore the potentialities of watercolor art to reveal my identity and my involvement in the world. It's a kind of spiritual practice for me to let the material be itself, rather than trying to tame and control it. Taking up my work I am always sure that a watercolor will find its own way, bypass invisible obstacles, soften and refine the pigment, get into the pores of paper and open up in the most unexpected way. As an artist I have to observe the origin of the image, to hear, feel and comprehend the material in order to release it.

The working process for me is a genuine miracle, the power of the creative dance, the creation of an image from a void. The flexible and unpredictable nature of the material sets the rules for the artist: when I am painting I do not try to figure out the result, each composition is a mystery. I see this process as a metaphor for life itself, I want to hear and feel its will, the natural manifestation of life.

For me watercolour painting is multidimensional, full of space and sound. The music of color and form, flowing, free, beyond structure. Music, life, vibration exist in matter, in everything that surrounds us. In my work I create images of moments and spaces imprinted in memory. I strive to express delicate, fragile figures in the poetry of existence, where I am a part of.

Artistic experience gives me the opportunity to discover the freedom of the creative spirit, to understand and hear myself. I paint nature as it appears through the prism of my soul, my mind. My art is a vision of spontaneity, the breathing energy nature of being, a statement of the wholeness and integrity of the Universe.
